The Blacklist is a yearly roundup of the best unproduced screenplays doing the rounds in Hollywood, as voted for by producers. It was started by an executive named Franklin Leonard back in 2005. He came up with the idea of forwarding a spreadsheet of the best unproduced scripts to fellow producers.

The Black List is an annual survey of the 'most liked' motion picture screenplays not yet produced. It has been published every year since 2005 on the second Friday of December by Franklin Leonard, a development executive who subsequently worked at Universal Pictures[1] and Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment.[2][3][4] The website states that these are not necessarily 'the best' screenplays, but rather 'the most liked', since it is based on a survey of studio and production company executives.[5]
Of the approximately 1000 screenplays The Black List has included since 2005, nearly a third have been later produced as theatrical films, including successful and award-winning examples such as Argo,[6]American Hustle, Juno,[7]The King's Speech, Slumdog Millionaire,[8]Spotlight, The Revenant, The Descendants, and Hell or High Water. The produced films have all together grossed well over $25.54 billion, and have been nominated for 241 Academy Awards and 205 Golden Globe Awards, winning 48 and 40, respectively.[9] As of the 88th Academy Awards, four of the last eight best picture Oscars went to scripts featured on a previous Black List, as well as ten of the last 20 screenwriting Oscars (Original and Adapted Screenplays). In addition, writers whose scripts are listed often find that they are more readily hired for other jobs, even if their listed screenplays still have not been produced, such as Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, two of the writers of the Oscar-winning screenplay of The Descendants, who had an earlier screenplay make the list.[3]Slate columnist David Haglund has written that the list's reputation as a champion for 'beloved but challenging' works has been overstated, since 'these are screenplays that are already making the Hollywood rounds. And while, as a rule, they have not yet been produced, many of them are already in production.'[10]
- Right here at Go Into The Story! And to learn when they first come online, follow me on Twitter: @GoIntoTheStory. Reminder: These scripts are for educational purposes only. Note: I taken down the Script Library as I have been informed the site cannot host screenplays, only provide links supplied by studios and production companies.
- My problem is that what is essentially a self indulgent, masturbatory 100 something page troll tweet temper tantrum was allowed to take the spot of some other actual script with an actual story someone felt passionate about on The Black List. It even being on there is a Donald Trumpesque populist nothing. It turns the list into an insider joke.
On January 27, 2019, it was announced at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Park City that the LGBTQ media advocacy group GLAAD has partnered with The Black List to create The GLAAD List, a new curated list of the most promising unmade LGBTQ-inclusive scripts in Hollywood. [11]

History[edit]
The first Black List was compiled in 2005 by Franklin Leonard, at the time working as a development executive for Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way Productions. He emailed about 75 fellow development executives and asked them to name the 10 best unproduced screenplays they read that year.[12] To thank them for participating, he compiled the list and sent it to the respondents. The name The Black List was a nod to his heritage as an African American man, and also as a subtle reference to the writers who were barred during the McCarthy era as part of the Hollywood blacklist.[13]
The screenplays to top The Black List, from 2005 to 2018 respectively, are: Things We Lost in the Fire; The Brigands of Rattleborge; Recount; The Beaver; The Muppet Man; College Republicans; The Imitation Game; Draft Day; Holland, Michigan; Catherine the Great; Bubbles; Blond Ambition; Ruin; and Frat Boy Genius.
Structure[edit]
The Black List tallies the number of 'likes' various screenplays have been given by development executives. Screenplays are ranked based on how many likes each of them get. The most likes received by a single screenplay is The Imitation Game, with 133 upon topping the 2011 list; it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Films on the Black List[edit]
More than 300 screenplays have been put into production after appearing on The Black List. These include:[14][15]

The Black List: 2017 Hollywood’s Best Un-produced Screenplays
The 2017 Black List screenplays are out. For those of you that don’t know, The Black List is an list of Hollywood’s most liked and unproduced screenplays. To make it on the list is an honor and can launch as screenwriter’s career. This years list has an unprecedented amount of screenplay by and about women. This year’s crop of scripts looks amazing. Congratulations to all these amazing screenwriters.
Former guest and friend of the IFH Podcast Scott Myers tells us all about the list in our interview. His blog Go Into the Story is the official screenwriting blog of The Black List.
What is The Blacklist?
Are you a good screenwriter? Do you have a script tailor-made for the next box office hit but can’t seem to get it noticed by a super agent or a major production outfit? Your Knight in shining armor could just be Leonard Franklin, the founder of The Black List.
The Black List has made a name for itself as the savior of the best, unproduced movie scripts in Hollywood. This is not just an exaggeration. The stats bear that out.
Since the inception of the list in 2005, over 300 scripts from the list have been produced into feature films. With the top-notched screenwriting, it is no surprise accolades for the movies include almost 300 Academy Awards nominations.
From those nominations have come 48 awards in categories such as Best Picture for movies like The King’s Speech, Argo, Slumdog Millionaire, and Spotlight.
Also, movies made from The Black List have dominated the screenwriting top prize, winning half of the last twenty Oscars in the screenwriting category.
Starting The Black List
The year was 2005. Franklin Leonard, a 2000 magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, was working at Appian Way Productions. His boss was Leonardo di Caprio. His job was to look for great scripts for the famous actor.
From his point of view, he was not doing a great job. So in a last desperate attempt to do something different, he hit on the idea that gave birth to The Black List.
He contacted 75 of his peers in other production companies with a simple request. They should give him a list of their best scripts that never got produced. In return, he promised to send them a collated list of the best, unproduced scripts in Hollywood.
He called this collated list The Black List.
Since that humble beginning, industry watchers wait in anticipation for the annual publication of the list. These days, some of the hidden gems in screenwriting can be found on the list.
Making The Black List
Franklin Leopard is always quick to tell the world that his list is not about promoting movies or the next big Hollywood box office hit. To him, the story written in the scripts are more important.
Even more important than that is the celebration of excellent screenwriting. So screenwriters are the number priority of The Black List.
However, the public is more concerned about what makes one screenwriter eligible to get on the list while others never, apparently, get a sniff.
To put this in context, over 50,000 scripts are written every year. Only a fraction of that become movies. And an even smaller number make it to the list.
Basically, a pool of over 500 industry insiders is asked to vote anonymously from a list of the best, unproduced scripts. Most of them send in their votes. The votes are tallied and the scripts are ranked according to the number of votes.
Scripts with the highest votes make it to the top of the list and so on.
Once a script gets on that list, a buzz is created around it. It is just a matter of time before it gets noticed by the people who matter.
